Look what I got!


It's an ugly little thing, granted but I love it because it's a genuine bit of English tiki!
Butlins is a legendary holiday camp over here and for some time had their own tiki bars in various camps. These bars were called Beachcomber Bars. Unfortunately, none survive today. But now I can own a little piece of tiki history from 1972.

One of my twitter buddies, scraparcs, sent me a link to this photo of an A frame building in Phoenix. I wanted to share it because not only is it a fabulous building but the roof reminds me of the English Googie restaurant I blogged about before.


The more I look at this building, the more I like it. I love the asymmetrical slope over the windows and of course the stonework.

AgilityNut's website informs me that it was apparently part of a 'tiki strip mall' - oh how I'd love to see one of those! It was most recently a car rental place but before that it was a Dairy Queen. Now, I'm still not exactly sure what a Dairy Queen is but I've certainly heard of them before (in American movies, etc.). I always thought they were some kind of ice cream parlour but I'm sure my American friends can tell me.

Leaky_tiki has more photos on his flickr and seems to think it was originally a sales centre for some condos/flats nearby.

I'd love to know its original purpose.

I hope it can be reincarnated as another business soon to stop it sliding into decay.

Hawaiian party to go to - yahoooooo! My friend's daughter is having a Hawaiian themed party for her 13th birthday next weekend. I have threatened to provide my tiki lounge/exotica music for the occasion and Uncle Dave has been begged not to be an embarrassment - oh, the perpetual embarrassment of being 13...

This party gave me the justification I needed to buy these gorgeous plumeria hair clips which arrived during the week. The lovely clips (made with foam flowers) are from Swingin Martini Designs and at $3 each ($5 for 2), the price alone is enough justification from me. I first caught sight of these flowers on the lovely Shannonegans' blog. Her etsy shop has more of these flowers in a range of colours.

Shannonegans really is a swell gal! Her customer service is brilliant - I even got a couple of freebies 'for being awesome'! When you visit, tell her I sent you and you may even get free postage. Now to find a reasonably priced Hawaiian shirt I can force Dave into wearing...

Oh me, oh my! I've found my new lust object. Retro bullet planters from Hip Haven.

These would look brilliant in a modern home (especially MY home) and I want some now!

The stands come in three sizes - tall 30", medium 23" and short 16" - and you could use them as much more than plant pots.

How about an alternative storage solution? Throw the kids toys in, some dirty clothes, your chocolate stash... hmmm, some kind of lid would be great, methinks.



You can find the selection of colours here but these are my personal favourites.




Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a stockist in the UK (let alone the money), so it will remain a dream, at least for the time being. But they will be mine... oh yes... they will be mine.

Today's been quite rough. I don't want to dwell upon it so won't go into details, but thought it would be a good opportunity to mention Valentina Ramos. Valentino is a talented artist with an amazing ornate and detailed style which really impress me. She creates pieces which often include inspirational messages. Since I've been looking for some inspiration to lift me out of the doldrums, I turned to her blog, 'Feeling Inspired'.

I think the first piece is the most fitting for me at the moment.

My new twitter buddy AtomicIndy retweeted about this: Architect Frank Shell's personal mid century modern home is up for sale. Hopefully someone who loves mid century style will snatch up this home in Portland and protect it from the 'renovation wolves'.


Original tweeter, MarisaPDX posted photos of the interior here but I also managed to find some photos with some furniture here. It's been a bit more difficult than I would have thought to find clear shots of the exterior, the best being the one on the left.
Dig this outdoor fireplace!

Mini Mid Mod

So my thoughts turned to mid-century style dollhouses (as they do) and I came across some adorable miniature mid-century modern furniture (quite a mouthful) on The Mid-Century Modernist. Turns out I can by these lovely mini chairs from £75 for the Pantons and up to £350 for the Eames lounge set from utility. I'm afraid even at these sale prices they are way out of my league.



Thankfully this blog is for dreaming and so all I need now is a doll house to put them in. Luckily, ThisNext has a list of the best modern style doll houses and I've managed to narrow it down to:
the Merrimack Contemporary Dollhouse

or the Contemporary Ranch Dollhouse.

Summer Loving

I attended my first boot sale as a seller today. Did quite well considering I was selling random bits I've had cluttering my garage for a while and would have otherwise thrown out. Unfortunately, I have got a bit of a nasty sunburn as England is amid its "heatwave". Laughable really, considering the climates of other countries. Nevertheless, the sun got me good!

After a quick nap at home, I went to a friend's house (my bootsale buddy), for a barbecue and have not long been home. I wanted to share one of the lovely passion flowers growing over the fence from their neighbour's garden.

Thought I would also share this brilliang painting Ebbo has painted of Pulteney Bridge in Bath recently.
