For The Birds

Yesterday we watched 'The Birds' - a film I've been meaning to see for a long time. Well, I watched it and Dave fell asleep half way through, but he got the gist.

It certainly looked pretty. The heroine, played by Tippi Hedren, was gorgeous and stylish and drove a cool car. I can see how it would have been scary in its time but the highlights for me were the hilarious bird attacks (although the shots of the birds gathering were quite menacing).

Now, 1963 Bodega Bay didn't seem the most hip and happening of places but the school teacher, played by the beautiful Suzanne Pleshette, had a pretty amazing mid century modern lamp in her abode.

We debated which actress was the most attractive.
Our verdict: the brunette was prettier but the blonde dressed better.

A couple of years ago, Mattel released this 'The Birds' Barbie:
I am now determined to become the unfortunate 'Melanie Daniels' at the very next fancy dress opportunity I get. I did dress as the tragic shower victim from 'Psycho' once and got a bit chilly. At least this outfit will have a chic jacket to keep me warm.

For those who haven't seen the movie, I won't give the ending away and tell you WHY the birds are attacking (mischevious knowing wink to all those who have seen it) but will recommend 'The Birds' to any person who doesn't mind watching older movies. I, for one, am glad to have finally seen this mid century classic.

Here's hoping your Easter break isn't 'for the birds'.

  2. Such a classic movie! I haven't seen it in a long time, must re-watch. I do remember how stylish Tippi Hedron was though. And the bird groupings were unnerving enough that when a murder of crows settled in my neighborhood for about an hour last month, it truly freaked me out. There must have been at least 10,000 of them!

  3. Great to read your review about the birds! I have seen it many many times - years ago I was writing an assignment about this movie at university. I love the set design too, and the beatiful shots. Though I think the eerie atmosphere is still making me anxious whenever I see a flock of seagulls...
