Spruce Mother Goose
I mentioned recently that I found a vintage children's book at a car boot sale - 'Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes', illustrated by Esme Eve (1958). Well, as I had the scanner out I decided to scan a few gems to share. There are sooooo many nursery rhymes in this book - a lot I've never even heard of (and I've heard a few). There's even a very, shall we say... politically incorrect rhyme.
If you have a favourite nursery rhyme, tell me in a comment and I'll scan the illustration. Wonder if we will stump the book?
See more scans on my flickr stream.
How about 'Elizabeth, Elspeth, Beth and Betsy'?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking 'This Is the House That Jack Built' til I went back and noticed that it's the first scan! Do you have the page with the rhyme itself - I don't think I remember it all!
Is the politically incorrect one "Ten Little N---- Boys"?!
These illustrations are charming! I love the colors, and I'm particularly fond of the pages of cats!
what the? I posted a comment in response and it's as if it never happened! I'll try again

Cool! I actually just found these on Flickr before making it back over here. Hmmmm, gotta work on "stumping the book"!
ReplyDeleteI got the "Un-P.C." one right!!
Great mid-century illustration. Nice find!
ReplyDeleteI would love to buy this book from you!
